Human memory is in some ways like a computer information-processing cycle. A computer can accept data (input), manipulate the data according to specified rules (process), produce results (output), and store the results for future use (storage). The cycle of input, process, output, and storage is called the information-processing cycle. For humans to remember any event requires that we experience the world through our sensations (experiencing), get information into our brain (encoding), retain that information (storage), and later get it back out (retrieval).

情報処理としての記憶

人間の記憶は、ある意味でコンピュータの情報処理サイクルに似ている。コンピュータはデータを受け付けることができ（入力）、特定のルール従ってデータを処理することができ（処理）、結果を出すことができ（出力）、将来の利用のために結果を蓄えることができる（記録）。入力、処理、出力、記録のサイクルは、情報処理サイクルと呼ばれる。人間がどんな出来事も覚えておくことは、我々の感覚を通して我々が世界を経験すること（経験）と、我々の脳の中に情報をいれること（記号化）と、情報を残しておくこと（記録）と、後に情報を探し出すこと（引き出し）を必要とする。
